As you might guess, we make a lot of bread at our house. We get all of the flour for our bread at Costco. Costco sells it in 50 pound bags. (Flour procurement is a job for the Man of the House as I’m not sure I could manage such a heavy, unwieldy item.) While we love our bread, it does take us months to go through the entire 50 pounds. So what do we do in the meantime?

It fits into two five-gallon buckets with no problem. These are food grade buckets that store the flour with no loss of quality that we’ve noticed.

But what about yummy whole wheat? That won’t last for months without refrigeration, will it?
That’s a good point. However the Man of the House is not a fan of whole wheat. We buy small bags of wheat flour at the grocery store and it lasts us a long, long time.
What brands of bread flour do they sell at Costco and at what cost? I’m thinking of getting a membership there.
Aaron – Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I was waiting for our next Costco run before replying. We went on Monday (January 4th) and we got a 50 pound bag of ConAgra bread flour. We paid $14.59 so that’s 29 cents a pound.
I love my Zmachine too! I have a recipe that calls for multigrain flour. Since I haven’t been able to find a bag of this type, I’m assuming I have to mix it myself. Have you tried this? If so, what flours work best and in what quantity?
Hi Robin, I haven’t used multi-grain flour in any of my recipes yet. I see that King Arthur Flour sells some:

Found a recipe for Ezekiel Bread for the bread machine:
1 cup of Water
1/4 cup Red Kidney beans -(cooked and drained)
1/4 cup Lentils – (cooked and drained)
1 1/2 Tbs. of Olive Oil
1 1/2 Tbs. of Honey
3/4 teaspoon of Salt
2 cups of Bread Flour
1/2 cup Barley Flour
1/2 cup Millet Flour
2 tbs. Vital Gluten
1 1/2 teaspoons Yeast
I haven’t tried it yet (just found it on line). Will give it a go and post back…:-)
The price of Ezekiel bread is getting out of hand….yikes!
Where do you get the 5 gallon buckets?
Cherie
Hi Cheri, My significant other makes mead, so one of our buckets was originally a honey container…I asked my in-house winemaker where a person could get more of those buckets. He said, “US Plastics is a great place to buy all kinds of buckets, and other plastic containers. These white 5-gallon buckets meet FDA requirements and are $4.26 + $1.36 for the lid. Don’t know about shipping though.”
