Bread Machine Onion Bread — 14 Comments

  1. I make a homemade version of the onion soup mix. I was desperate one day when I was making a recipe that called for it, and thought I had it! So I checked online, and there are several recipes listed.
This way you control the sodium and sugar, along with the chemicals they contain.
I have a favorite recipe that I’ve used over and over, but I don’t know if it would be appropriate to post the link to it here. Marsha?

I made this today and we already ate most of it. I make my own onion soup powder with no sugar, so I added 2 tablespoons of sugar and it was wonderful. Thank you for the recipe!

  3. Hi Eve, I’m working my way through your bread machine recipes! We love the onion bread! The only thing I did was add dill weed to the recipe and it came out great! Could have baked a few more minutes but it will be gone before that even matter! So happy I found your recipes!

  4. I can post a link to a recipe for carmelized onion bread but I don’t know if you allow that. Let me know if it’s ok. Uses just plain old onions and it’s great!

  5. Any tips on making this without the soup mix? (I don’t do well with MSG.) Take an ordinary bread recipe and add a bit of onion powder and bouillon powder? I have onion powder sitting in my cupboards unused, and I occasionally eye it suspiciously.

    • There’s sugar in the soup mix. So that’s what’s feeding the yeast. While the bread tastes great, it’s not very pretty. I’ve had one reader suggest that it’s too much liquid. I need to play around with that to see if that makes a difference.
