Bob’s Red Mill 10 Grain Bread Mix Review — 13 Comments

  1. Hi, Marsha:

I was just given a 2 lb. bread machine and wonder if you have any recipes I could use without buying a bread mix. I’m particularly interested in white bread. Thanks.

  2. I just got my first breadmaker yesterday and just happened to have Bob’s Red Mill 10 grain mix in the house. It filled up my 2lb breadmaker(i really didnt know if it was supposed to or not seeing as how its my first loaf lol) but it did taste pretty good. I will say the bottom seemed to get harder than I thought it would be but it was good for a Whole wheat bread. Just found your site so I will be a frequent visitor as I try out new things

  3. i got a 1lb bread machine the other day at the thrift store and just tried my first loaf. yeah, it didn’t work out so much. but i did try to get all experimental, i probably should have saved that for after i had some experience. i also bought some of this mix because it looked good, failing to notice it was a 1.5 lb loaf bag…everything I’ve found says pretty much don’t attempt to downsize the recipe. Would you agree? I am such a deflated wannabe bread maker right now 🙁

    • Maggie, I’m so sorry that you haven’t had a good time with your bread machine so far. Hang in there! As you may have suspected, my advice to you is to go back to the basics. See if you can go online to find the instruction book that came with your machine. There should be some recipes in there that will work great with your machine.

  4. Agreed – if the mix filled the machine, it’s more of a 2 lb loaf. We call the 1.5 lb loafs “boot bread” around here but the same as your hippo loaf – misshapen at best LOL. It’s not much of an issue as I usually don’t bake in my Zo.

Too bad it’s not a dense wheat bread as I love those….still looking for good recipes for that.

Happy baking! (Have a loaf of banana date nut yeast bread rising in my Zo as I write)

  5. Hi, Actually this mix works fine in a 1 1/2 lb pan. I use Bob’s mixes all the time. My favorite is the potato bread mix. Very light and airy and a nice flavor. I add a little cornmeal for crunch. Did you program for a 1 1/2 lb. loaf or just bake for a 2 lb.? I just found a 2lb. Zo machine at the goodwill and wondered if it would work for a 1 1/2 mix?

    • Catherine, Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Have you tried this specific mix? I was so surprised to find that it filled the entire pan. What usually happens when I make a 1.5 recipe in my 2 pound machine is that I get a hippo loaf. (My raspberry bread photo is a good example of a hippo loaf.) So a 1.5 mix or recipe works fine in a 2 pound machine. It’s just that the loaves may be shaped a little strangely.

      • Sorry not to have responded sooner, but life got in the way…Now, yes I have tried this specific mix, I have tried as many of Bob’s bread mixes as I have been able to find. I have also used two different machines (cuisinart and williams sonoma). Still haven’t used the zo yet. No problem using any of them at the 1 1/2# setting. Makes a nice high loaf. I noticed in your photo of the loaf in your 2# machine that the top is kind of low in the center. In my machines this does not happen. So maybe that is just because it was baked in a 2# machine…

  6. Hi Marsha,

great to read a review – including picture – about the 10 grain bread mix. I am just wondering, did you have to add your own yeast or was it provided? Could you possible have added too much yeast making your bread rise out of the pan?

    I love your blog!

    Marc
