Applesauce Bread Recipe for the Bread Machine — 38 Comments

  1. I’m getting ready to make this recipe, but all I have is cinnamon applesauce…. can I use that and not use the cinnamon it calls for in the recipe?

  2. 5 stars
I got a free Zojirushi from someone who wasn’t using it any longer. It’s amazing! And thank you for this recipe. I went heavy on the spices (a cake spice mix from Penzey’s), replaced 1/2 cup of whole wheat bread with buckwheat flour, and used honeycrisp unsweetened applesauce from Costco. It smells great, and it tastes amazing with a thin layer of jam. I will experiment with adding a little bit of sugar next time, and will be adding walnuts. Thank you!

  3. Marsha, a sweet pumpernickel is next on my list to make. This is a test to whether I am still blocked from remarking via this comment venue. I will post my sweet pumpernickel recipe directly to the email you sent me. Thanks for your contact.

  4. Making this right now! So far so good, putting machine on dough cycle only and will bake in the oven.
I used pumpkin pie spice (the propitiatory mix from someone) instead of the cinnamon and applesauce I made with apples from my neighbors tree. For the “nut and fruit” additions I used some candied fruit I have had soaking in rum for a year!
It’s mixing and rising now – the scent that is coming out of the machine is heavenly. Cycle is an hour and a half, I’m sure it will rise up nicely by the time I shove it in the oven.
Cool site, just found it and thanks!

  5. I made this recipe but used 2 cups of wheat flour with some gluten which I let set for a day and only 1 and 1/4 cup of bread flour. It rose nicely. It actually came out a little heavy but very very tasty.

  6. This turned out wonderfully. I have lots of Brown Turkey figs So I simmered them quickly to make “fig sauce”. Most fig recipes are too sweet so I used this unsweetened fig sauce and this bread raised and tasted great. Pretty darn healthy, too! Thanks, Diva!

  7. Tried this recipe yesterday using unsweetened applesauce, raise some and cinnamon. Thought it needed a bit more liquid and added a 1/4 cup of water after it had mixed a bit. Llove the dense, meaty texture. Like others I was concerned it wasn’t rising much but in the main cook cycle it came up like a 1.5 lb loaf. To be honest, I think the recipe needs more cinnamon and raisins than stated. The aroma of cinnamon while cooking was strong, yet mild when eating. Definitely needed more raisins than stated. Hard to even find them ?. I liked it so much though I am making more today to finish up the apple sauce.

  8. Hi! I’m still learning how to use my bread machine and followed the instructions. How long is the loaf suppose to cook? What crust setting do you recommend? I may have messed up the loaf since I have to keep checking to see if it is done. Thank you!

  9. Trying this one now. Used the normal basic bread setting. The loaf did not rise much before the baking cycle started, so I am hoping basic setting was right. If it doesn’t work this time, I’m going to try the wheat setting next time. Maybe it needs more rise time.

  10. Love your site, trying one recipe at a time. Has anyone put cinnamon in this recipe? I am going to try it. Will let you know the outcome. Wish me luck.

  11. Awesome recipe! I did alter it to include a little vanilla extract and a bit more sugar since I used unsweetened apple sauce, but it came out wonderfully. Thanks for sharing!

  12. Yummy! Thanks for the recipe! 🙂
When I want to boost nutrition (all the time…lol) I use white whole wheat flour, as I did with this bread. The kiddos don’t even notice the difference.

    • Hi Lynn, The loaf size is a smallish two pound loaf. It might fit in a 1.5 pound machine, but I’d hate to be wrong about that and have someone’s machine overflow. If anyone has made it in a 1.5 pound machine please let me know and I’ll update the recipe.

  13. So I have a whole bunch of applesauce that I made homeaid! Is that ok to use due to it have a lot of sugar? Also do I have to use whole wheat flour.. It seems like I am buying soo much flour for so many diffrent kinds of bread. So I was just wondering if I have to use the whole wheat. And more.. just want to say thankyou for all your recipes.. I just got a bread machine (for free due to the fact that the person who gave it to me use it once ) Yay for me right.. But I have been comeing to you site and getting a lot of diffrent ideas. I use my machine everyday!! So thankyou for taking your time to post all the ideas..

    • Coletty – Thanks for the compliments! I’m so glad you like the site. And way to go on your free bread machine!!

If I were you, I’d experiment with your homemade applesauce in the recipe. Leave out the sugar and see what happens. If it rises too much you may want to put in more salt or less yeast to compensate. Once you’ve got the recipe adjusted for that, then switch to using just white flour. I’ve done that a few times and it makes a bigger loaf, but it tastes just fine.

    • Hi, I used the recipe with all the ingredients except I used my own canned applesauce which has plenty of sugar, so I omitted the sugar but followed the recipe and mine didn’t turn out. It didn’t raise much at all. So I guess I won’t be making this again. But I do like a lot of your other recipes. Thanks for sharing!
