Super Bowl Sandwich

It’s almost time for the Super Bowl. At our house that means it’s time to plan for the Mighty Super Bowl Sandwich. We’re working out the details and haven’t picked the bread yet. Here are the contenders:

Cheese and Onion Bread – This is our historical favorite. We’ve used this bread more than all the others combined. The bread is flavorful and I love the way it smells when it cooks.
Rosemary Bread – This is the newcomer to the competition. We’ve used this one in recent years because of the bread’s texture and savory flavor.
Potato Bread – This classic bread is moist and tasty. It’s perfect for those Super Bowl sandwiches.
Light Rye Bread – This one won our 2011 Rye Bread Sandwich Taste Off.

No matter what bread we pick, the Super Bowl sandwich will undoubtedly include our special sandwich sauce. It’ll be good!

Super Bowl 2011 Sandwich

Around our house the Super Bowl is a big event. The halftime sandwiches are a matter of great discussion and planning. Over the years these have been our favorite sandwich breads for the mighty Super Bowl sandwich:

Cheese and Onion Bread – We’ve used this bread more than all the others combined. The bread is flavorful and I love the way it smells when it cooks.
Rosemary Bread – I love to make this bread. The kitchen smells like rosemary as I chop the herb.
Potato Bread – This classic bread is moist and tasty. It’s perfect for those Super Bowl sandwiches.

Leftover Corned Beef?

For scheduling reasons we had corned beef and cabbage the day before Saint Patrick’s Day. However I didn’t feel one bit slighted on the day itself as we took the leftover corned beef, freshly baked potato bread, pepper jack cheese and added the special sandwich sauce developed by the Man of the House. The sandwiches were heavenly!!

Sandwich Sauce

Another blog I read recently had a debate about sandwiches. Is packing a few sandwiches a valid way to save money on a road trip or is it torture disguised as frugality? Maybe it depends on who’s making the sandwiches. The Man of the House is known to our immediate circle of friends and family as the king of all sandwich makers. Here’s a recipe for his secret sauce.

Sandwich Sauce

1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup mayo
1 Tablespoon dried onion
1 teaspoon dried garlic
1/4 teaspoon horseradish
1/4 teaspoon Sambal (or other hot sauce)

Mix this all together and use on sandwiches.

The Man of the House says to feel free to change the proportions around to suit your own taste. You can also use fresh minced garlic, fresh diced onion or chopped red peppers.

You should also make the sauce a little bit ahead of time so that the dried onions have time to hydrate.
